Here are some ideas about the types of activities that count towards your Community Action hours. This isn’t a list of things to do, you may have ideas of your own we would never have thought about.
Community Action is any kind of activity which benefits an individual, group or the environment. It’s about learning through action and volunteering.
In school:
- Mentoring younger pupils.
- Helping others with reading or sports skills.
- Fundraising for a good cause locally or globally (Hampers for OAP’s, Shoe Box appeal, Shelter Boxes etc.)
- Helping keep the grounds tidy.
- Gardening.
- Helping out in subject areas or in after school clubs.
- Drama performances, including rehearsal time.
- Band performances for the entertainment of others.
- Voluntary attendance on revision programmes where your presence helps others with their work.
- Being a Design Team or Get VOCAL member.
- Taking on a position of responsibility within school, e.g. Peer mentor.
- Volunteering through the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.

At home and with Family:
- Being a young carer, looking after others.
- Delivering younger brothers or sisters to school or collecting them at the end of the day.
- Helping elderly relatives.
- Spending time on a conservation project.
- Helping neighbours.
- Looking after the area around your home.

Community and Global:
- Being part of a group that does good work e.g. Scouts/ Guides/ Cadets/ Boys or Girls Brigade, etc.
- Helping neighbours.
- Doing an elderly neighbours’ or friends’ garden.
- Being part of a conservation group.
- Helping coach younger players for a local sports team.
- Helping others use ICT.
- Fundraising for a local, national or global issue.
- Being a member of a dance group who perform to entertain at a summer fair or a fundraising event.
- Helping to decorate or do up your local youth club.
