YEAR 7 RUGBY V GREENACRE away
After having a successful match v Greenacre at home during term 1, Cornwallis were very confident that they could come away with another win. Cornwallis were missing some key players and it seemed that Greenacre had included some of their star performers who had just come back from injury.
It was a one way affair for Greenacre who totally dominated the whole game. There were some hints of individual brilliance from stand in captain James Ellmore who went forward all day. He was backed up by hard man Rob Smith and talented backs Alex McVeigh and Ellis Longworth.
Back to training ready for next week’s away match with Hugh Christie.
Score: Greenacre 40- Cornwallis 0
Team: James Ellmore, Glen White, Ed Briddle, Alex McVeigh, Ellis Longworth, Zac Stiff, Harry Rofe, Luke Baker, Ben Weeden, Louis Murdoch, Dylan Nerval, Ryan Oliver, Rob Smith, Alex Hodges, Ab Hick.

YR 7 & 8 Girls Futsal Tournament
Year 7 Team
Holly Thwaites, Chloe Gilham, Shelby Baker, Devon Moon, Niamh Hall, Georgina Weatherley.

The girls played in a Tournament on Tuesday and played Holmesdale, which they lost 1-0 and against Malling they won the game 2-1 with 2 goals from Holly Thwaites. This was the first time some of the girls had played Futsal but played really well, and supported each other well on the pitch.

Year 8 Team
Whitney Wilshire, Lydia Wills, Maddie Harris, Fiona Constable
The year 8 team were a more experienced team and in their first match against Valley Park, the girls destroyed the opposition 4-0, with some excellent goals from Lydia Wills. We were very unfortunate in our next match against MGGS. Cornwallis had all the play but could not put the ball in the net. They had a lucky break and scored. Final score Cornwallis 0 MGGS 2. In our final match we played Wrotham and once again Cornwallis won 2-1 with some excellent play by Maddie Harris and Whitney Wilshire.

Year 7 Football v Meopham (Kent Cup match 3rd round)
The year 7 boys had a tough cup draw against Meopham away. We started off strongly and grabbed a few early goals. The boys kept battling hard through the cold, wind and rain. The central midfielder Chris Carcary had a very tough job to do but out muscled the Meopham players to challenge for the ball. We scored another two quick goals before half time going into the break 4 - 0 up. In the second half the boys took their foot off the pedal somewhat and conceeded a couple of silly goals. An inspiration substitution from the manager Mr Jones saw the centre half's and Midfielder switch to create more pressure on the Meopham players. After this we scored another couple of goals to finish off 6 - 2.
The boys played extremely well and will meet either Greenacre Or Bordon GS in the 4th round of the Kent cup.
Manager: Mr Jones

Thursday 18/11/10
Year 7 Rugby v Hugh Christie away
After last week’s disappointment Cornwallis had a lot to play for. Back from Football commitments, Chris Carcary and Ryan Phillips added some flair to the Cornwallis backline, and it was Ryan who got things going early doors with a magnificent individual try.
A series of big defensive tackles from our enforcers Rob Smith, James Ellmore, Louis Murdoch, Ab Hicks and Ben Weeden created an endless platform for our talented backs to weave their magic out wide.
Hugh Christie tried to spin the ball wide but Luke Baker who was playing in a new position at fullback did not let anything through. His textbook tackles around the legs stopped any momentum that Hugh Christie were trying to create.
Further tries from Dylan Nerval, Chris Carcary, Rob Smith and Ryan Phillips sealed the comprehensive win. 45-7 was the final score thanks to some great conversions from Alex McVeigh as well.
Team: James Ellmore, Glen White, Ed Briddle, Alex McVeigh, Ellis Longworth, Chris Kincade, Harry Rofe, Luke Baker, Ben Weeden, Louis Murdoch, Dylan Nerval, Ryan Oliver, Rob Smith, Alex Hodges, Ab Hick, Chris Cary, Ryan Phillips.

MAIDSTONE U14 GIRLS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS
U14 Girls Basketball Tournament
On Thursday 18th November the U14 girls basketball team travelled to Aylesford school for the Maidstone Basketball tournament.  They played 2 games.  The first was against MGGS.  The opposition came out fighting and played a very strong game.  They were very aggressive challenging every pass and shot we made.  The Cornwallis squad proved themselves stronger and fought back with great determination.  They waited for gaps in the defence by controlling possession  and took advantage of them when they could.  There was some great defensive play from Shottie, Lydia and Megan and some good shooting from Ella.  We deservedly won the game 8-4.
The second game was against The Malling school.  This was a much calmer game and the girls really had a chance to show off the skills they have been practicing.  There was some outstanding play in both attack and defence from the whole squad.  The girls shooting was very impressive as they relaxed into the swing of the match.  The final score was Cornwallis 24 v 4 Malling.
The Girls were crowned the Maidstone U14 champions
Squad:

Year 7 Football v St. Simon Stock
After narrowly losing our first match of the season 5:6, we decided to consult "The Special One" about strengthening our defence. Outstanding deputy team captain Ryan Golding from 7C ( No favours, purely on merit) got the defence line geared up and ready to stop any living being go past them. Our team captain was not available for the match due to football engagement with Charlton Athletic so Kyle Fraser stood in for him in the midfield partnered by dependable Gabriel Foster Crouch. We knew scoring goals wasn't a problem - just like Chelsea, we know how bury the ball in the net. Alex McVeigh and Ryan Philips have their scoring boots on and ready to do harm.
The match kicked off at 4pm with SSS trying to dominate in the middle of the field with their star player (A girl that is the next big thing in English football - she is on sky sports and plays for Chelsea - I can't remember her name so I will refer to her as "The Girl") causing havoc in the middle of the field and around the 18yrd box. It took sleek tackles and organisation from Ryan Golding to keep "The Girl" from scoring. However, the first through pass from Connor Tomkins in the 15th minute got Alex McVeigh one-on-one with the goal keeper and Alex beautifully lobbed the ball over the approaching keeper to put us one goal ahead. The goal geared the opposing team up and they piled more pressure on us. "The Girl" went on a run through the middle of the field cutting through our defence line and slotting the ball to the bottom left corner of the goal 1:1. We wrestled the initiative from them again with Elliot on the left wing combining effectively with Gabriel FC before Ryan Philips struck the ball from 20yrds out beating their goal keeper for our 2nd goal. Just before the end of the half, a mistake by SSS defence line allowed Elliot to slot in the 3rd goal. The Half ended 3:1 in favour of Cornwallis.
At half time, I decided to man-mark SSS "The Girl". The job was given to Michael McCulloch hoping it will keep her a little bit quiet. We started the second half very well and within minutes we got rewarded. Alex McVeigh again making the art of scoring look easy - He must have been watching Chelsea the last few weeks. With a through pass from Joe Sturrock and he went past two defenders with ease before rounding the keeper for the 4th goal. We held our lead until the closing minutes before another sublime free kick from "The Girl" got SSS their 2nd goal. Another mistake from our defence allowed in the 3rd goal but we held out until the end of the match. It ended 4:3 to Cornwallis.
Team List
  1. William Campbell
  2. Chris Cancary
  3. Alex McVeigh (2 goals)
  4. James Beck

Year 7 Football v Holmesdale

After 2 shaky results, we trashed Holmesdale 7:0. Mark, remember I told you this afternoon that I have worked on our defensive tactics? I think I am officially Jose the tactician.

The boys were outstanding and we should be very proud of themselves.

Week Monday 04/10/10- Friday 08/10/10
Tuesday 05/10/10
Year 7 Football v Oakwood Park Grammar School
It was a very wet and gloomy day but we were able to arrive at OPGS for a 4pm Kick off. They dominated the first few minutes but Ryan Philips, against the run of play went past 2 defenders and lobbed the ball above the on-coming keeper for the 1st goal of the match. They quickly pilled pressure on our defence line and our new goal keeper conceded 2 easy goals in 5 minutes. Izac and Ryan worked their passes through the middle of the field before Ryan superbly struck the ball from 30yrds out to beat the keeper and level the score 2:2. Another error from our goal keeper led to their 3rd goal before the Keeper got substituted. The 1st half ended 3:2.
We started the second half stronger and got rewarded with an early goal by Elliot. Half way through the second half a superb strike from our opponents beat our hard working keeper for the 4th goal for OPGS. We took the initiative again and pilled pressure on them which led to many scoring chances which were not successfully converted (We miss our leading scorer dearly - Alex McVeigh). The match ended 4:3 in favour of OPGS
Ryan Golding was once again outstanding throughout the match. He is a model student on and off the pitch - Head Boy material.

The team played very well as a whole. With exceptional performances from Dan Ashton, Tim Goode, Josh Woolley and my man of the match goes to Matt Russell for his different yet effective style of defending.

WEEK MONDAY 11/10/10- FRIDAY 15/10/10
Wednesday 13/10/10
Year 7 Rugby v Greenacre School
After last week’s win against Howard School there was a sigh was confidence spreading through the year 7 rugby camp. A couple of newcomers have added some much needed extra spice and the team is starting to play with a little more flair.
Ryan Phillips started off proceedings with two well worked individual tries. He then had to get substituted along with fly half Alex McVeigh  has they both had to move across to the other side of the field to play a school Football match. What athletes!
Rob Smith and Dylan Nerval also scored very good individual tries, but the side needs to start creating team tries rather than individual ones. Unfortunately the defence slipped during the final minutes and Greenacre crossed the line as well.

Final score: Cornwallis 20, Greenacre 5
Teamlist: Abraham Hicks, Rob Smith, Zac Stiff, Louis Murdoch, James Ellmore, Jake Young, Glen White, Connor Hatton, Ellis Longworth, Alex McVeigh, Harry Rofe, Ryan Phillips, Luke Baker, Dylan Nerval, Sam Thorpe, Ryan Oliver, James Blacknall, Ed Bridell, Alex Hodges, Ben Weeden.

Year 7 Football v Hundred of Hoo
Team...
James Bush - LB
Ryan Goulding - CB
Jack Feehan - CB
Connor Tomkin - RB
Elliot Whyhe - LM
Izak Johnson - CM
Gabriel Foster Couch - CM
Chris Cacary - RM
Ryan Philips - ST
Alex McVeigh - ST

Subs, Joe Sturuck, Adam Marshall, William Campbell, Gregory Ralph, Alex Pooley, Billy Hudson, Jesse

The cup match was always going to be a challenge as H.o.H have always been known to have a strong footballing teams. However Cornwallis took a fairly early lead with James Bush slotting away the early game decider. Cornwallis seemed to be plagued with injury in the second half with both Chris Cacary and Alex McVeigh going down. Fortunately Cornwallis had many spare legs which paved the way for team debuts by 4 out of our 5 subs. H.o.H seemed dangerous on the break and Cornwallis had to thank the woodwork for denying an excellently struck late in the second half.
A much deserved win and many outstanding performances.

Man of the match goes Ryan Goulding for some vital defensive work as Cornwallis through to the next round of the cup!

Year 7 Rugby vs The Howard School @ Gillingham Anchorians

Wed 6 Oct

Cornwallis 20

The Howard School 10

After a heavy defeat to the same school 'A' team the week before Cornwallis were happy to take on a side of similar strength, With many players still learning the game on both sides it was more get the ball than rugby at times. In this vain Chris Carcary and Dylan Nerval showed a clean pair of heels both scoring tries. Robert Smith was however the player of the day scoring two tries and displaying good power throughout the match.

Team: Robert Smith, Ellis Longworth (captain), Ben Weeden, Luke Baker, Dylan Nervall, Connor Luck, Glen White, Harry Rofe, Abraham Hicks, Sam Thorpe, Jake Young, Ryan Oliver, Ben Kincaid, Chris Carcary.

1st XV Rugby vs Cranbrook 3rd XV

Cranbrook 35

Cornwallis 5

The Cornwallis 1st XV got their season underway against the Cranbrook 3rd XV last week. This fixture has proved difficult in the past as Cranbrook are usually more experienced and prepared in this early part of the year. The difference in preparation was evident from the start as Cranbrook controlled the ruck and maintained possession. Cornwallis battled throughout the match but lacked the fitness and cohesion to pose any real threat. The only consulation coming in the third quarter when after their best peiod of play the forwards rubbled over the line for Cornwallis sole try of the match. Andy Vaughan and Josh Mckenzie worked well in the pack but this team will have to train hard and come together quickly if they want to improve their record this season.

TEAM: J.Mckenzie, C. Richter-Smith, T. Boon, M. King, A. Vaughan, G. Krousti, D.Drury, M. Bishop, J.Hood, A. Clarke, J. Cook, L. Goodrich, A. Cloake, T. Jenkins

In the staff features Mark Jones just managed to take the 100m dash in front of Matt Spall, Tommy King a close third. The Staff relay was expectedly dominated by the PE flyers.

Thanks to all the students for their behaviour and effort on the day and the staff for their help and support.

Monday 28th June 1st XI vs Langley

The senior cricket team travelled to Langley Park Boys School to play in the semi-final of the Kent 1st XI cricket league. For the 2nd year in row Cornwallis had made the top 4 in the county.

This was going to be a tough ask as Langley had some good players and when co-captain Matt White got out after feathering a catch to the keeper the task got even tougher. Danny Rowe batted well for his 65 and there were some good contributions from Chris Feltham and Jimmy Funnell.

In the end Langley had too much depth but it was a great effort from all the boys, especially from the year 13’s who have played extremely hard from year 7 all the way through to year 13.

Team list: Matt White, Chris Feltham, Danny Rowe, Lee Tidey, Tom Hazzard, James Hopkins, Josh Robins, Jimmy Funnell, James Rowe, Dan Barkaway, Jason White

Staff Cricket vs St Simon Stock

The staff cricket team went down to a St Simon Stock side on Friday. The team stuggled to find the rhythem they had displayed against MGS.

'Clutch' Sheehan took the first breakthough wicket with Chidi managing to hold onto straightforward catch. Apart from that it was a pretty disappointing bowling performance that let SSS score 117.

Opener Pennington failed to get on the scoreboard whileJames Critell was the top scorer with 38. A late Cameo from Geoff Flower was too little too late.

Team: Jones (Captain), Critell, King, Watts, Chidi, Pennington, Kira, Simmons, Verrell, Clutch, Flower

U13 Cricket vs St Simon Stock

In the second pool match against the always well drilled St Simon Stock this match was always going to be close. After winning the toss and putting SSS into bat Cornwallis bowled acurately throughout the entire innings, minimising the extras considerably from previous matches. Callum Smith had some success opening while Ben Swift and Lewis Midwinter also had good figures. Things were looking good until their stike batsman came in down the order and got SSS through to 100 off the 20 overs.

Opening batsman Dan Sharpe and Ben Barkaway got off to a flying start averaging 10 an over. Sharpe was the first wicket to go though shortely after.

Barkaway and Hopkins then went on to form the partnership of the match getting Cornwallis through to 80 before both were dismissed in quick sucession. Midwinter cracked a 4 before departing. The game was left to Josh Turnem-Scott and Tom Wilmott to finish 3 off the last 3 balls it was Tom Wilmott who eventually cracked one over the head of long-on and seal an exciting match with 2 balls to go.

Team: Ben Barkaway, Ben Swift, Dan Sharpe, Jason Morley, Josh Turnem-Scott, Shottie Hopkins, Callum Smith, Lewis Midwinter, Harry Gallop, Dylan Ruler, Jordan Smith

U13 Cricket vs The Marsh Academy

An understrength and under maned Cornwallis took the field on the abnormal Friday afternoon.

Put into bat Cornwallis had no players who were able to exert themselves into significant scores. Dan Sharpe started well but failed to score double figures. Ben Swift and Lewis Midwinter hit boundaries but played poor shots and were ultimately the engineers of their own demise. Josh Turnem-Scott, one of a handful of year 7 students in the match looked the most confortable at the crease and after establishing himself managed to see out the innings, playing some good looking cricket shots along the way. Unfortunately Cornwallis could only manage 64 for 9 all out.

The Marsh Academy didn't start well at all. Ben Swift and Callum Wilson taking early wickets and slowing the runrate significantly. The first bowling change of Lewis Midwinter continued the attack and he bowled a tight line taking a couple of wickets. Jordan Smith a late call up was also working very hard on the boundary and fielded well saving a number of runs.

Spirits were high half way through the match and the game was evenly poised. The Marsh Acdamey had an ace up their sleeve and what looked like a county player soon took control of the match. After a couple of big overs for the Marsh they were soon on top and their 'star player finished the match before the alocated overs.

A disappoiting loss that sees Cornwallis out of the Kent Cup however with a full strength side it is encouraging to know thre team was capable of a lot more.

Team: Dan Sharpe (Captain), Ben Swift, Lewis Midwinter, Jordan Smith, Callum Smith, Jason Arnold, Harry Gallop, Josh Turnem Scott, Lewis Kemp

Coach: Tommy King

U13 Kent school games basketball play offs

The U13 girls basketball team qualified for the regional play offs.  We took a large squad of 11 girls from across year 7 and 8.  Our 1st game was up against St.Gregory's RC comprehensive.  Cornwallis came on court with a great attitude feeling very confident.  Sophie Brown scored an excellent basket very quickly followed by Amy Pearce.  The other team tried to play defensively but Cornwallis kept up a strong attack.  Amy scored another goal floowed by 2 more from Ella Delves.  The final score was Cornwallis 10 v 0 St Gregory's.

The second game was against Tonbridge grammar school.  They fielded a good team testing Cornwallis' defence.  Shottie Hopkins and Amy Pearce worked hard to hold them off but unfortunately let a couple of baskets through. We fought back with a basket from Ella Delves and Megan Murrell.  Unfortunately we couldn't stop them scoring a couple more with the final score being Cornwallis 4 v 8 Tonbridge grammar.

The final game was against Maplesden Noakes.  They were a strong team and they worked our defence hard. Ashley Jordan worked hard to block them out of the key.  Whitney Wilsher fed the ball through court well and Lydia Wils was magnificent at shooting scoring a totol of 4 baskets!!!!  The final score was Cornwallis 8 v 4 MNS.

The team put in a great performance and worked really well together.  Shottie Hopkins was a fantastic captain and made some great tactical suggestions throughout the tournament.  Cornwallis finished as runners up which was a great achievement and also meant we qualified for the Kent Schools games grand final held on 3rd July.  The team are very excited about the tournament and looking forward to playing schools from across the county at Canterbury University.

THURSDAY 6TH MAY

YR 9 ROUNDERS V INVICTA, VALLEY PARK & NLL

On Thursday 6th May the yr 9 Rounders team travelled to Valley Park to play in a mini-tournament.

Valley Park did not make an appearance so the first game was against NLL. Cornwallis batted first, with some impressive performances with the bat from Charlotte Thatcher and Leah O'Neill, who were our top scorers. We also capitalised on some fielding mistakes from the Nll players and managed to score 9 1/2 rounders.

Nll in their innings scored 3 1/2 Rounders. We managed to get most of their team out by some excellent fielding work from our awesome bowler, backstop and 1st base combination. These players were Ellen Honybun, Charlotte Thatcher and Morgan White.  Final score was: Cornwallis 9 1/2  NLL 3 1/2

Next up were Invicta who had warmed up by playing and beating NLL. We lost the toss and batted first again, but unfortunately our big hitters were not performing as well during this match, and with some excellent fielding from the Invicta team we only managed to score 2 1/2Rounders.

Invicta also had some big hitters, who were on form, and it was only through excellent deep fielding from Liz Hopper that we managed to keep their scoring down.  Final score:  Cornwallis 2 1/2  - Invicta 8.

Well done to: Ellen Honybun, Charlotte Thatcher, Morgan White, Leah O'Neill, Liz Hopper, Amy Ellson, Kirsty Gorman

1ST XI Cricket v MGS (Kent Cup round 1)

Cornwallis travelled to MGS for the first round of the KC having beaten MGS last year. This was going to a big game as no Grammar school wants to be put in their place against a high school.

With a slightly weaken side due to injury and exam commitments Cornwallis started very slowly. Matt White looked in good form with an unbeaten 71 out of 100 runs for the innings.

It was always going to be tough defending this total and MGS took them game to Cornwallis and completed a convincing win by 7 wickets.

Team: Matt White ©, Chris Feltham, Danny Rowe, James Rowe, Josh McKenzie, Matt Hazzard, Dan Barkaway, Jason White, Craig Fawcett, Josh Robins, Lee Tidy

The full 20 overs were not required by Fulston to get the runs.

WEDNESDAY 12TH MAY

1ST XI Cricket v Tunbridge Wells Boys Grammar School

After the disappointment of losing to MGS a week earlier, Cornwallis returned to the Mote CC to play another grammar school in the Kent League. There were nervous signs around the ground as again players had to be promoted from younger age groups as injury and unavailability affected the team.

Matt White was the start with the ball as he picked up a 5 wicket hall. James Rowe and Jimmy Funnell also pitched in with 2 each and stand in captain, Chris Feltham bagged himself one.

The target was only 63 runs to win. There were a few hiccups along the way but all in all Cornwallis went on to a comfortable victory.

Teamlist: Matt White, Chris Feltham ©, James Rowe, Jimmy Funnell, Dan Barkaway, Jason White, Josh McKenzie, Charlie Himbury, Craig Fawcett, Josh Robins, James Hopkins

Key stage 3 cricket team v Astor of Hever

The first game of the year for the team was played away at Astor of hever. Some good open bowling from Shottie Hopkins and Callum Smith restricted Astor’s total runs to 63.

A great batting display from the ‘chirpy wicky’ Sharpy and Lewis Midwinter secured the first victory of the season.

Year 8 Football League Final

I have finally picked myself up to prepare this report after a sad evening. I had planned to write a thrilling encounter with a happy ending but here I am, not knowing where to start from.

The build-up to the match was fantastic and our supporters couldn’t wait for kick-off. The match finally kicked off @ 4pm with both sided trying to hold a better grip of the mid-field. MGS had the first clear chance to score but the pressure from our dependable defender Ben Swift made the MGS 6ft attacker wildly swing at the ball as we watched the ball brush past the cross bar.

Daniel Sharpe and Mitchell Dickenson started to exert themselves more in the mid-field and that led to few good exchanges between Tom Wilmot and Jordan Smith but the final shot from Jordan Smith went a few inches wide of the top left corner.

MGS put through a long ball that beat our defence line and left their attacker one-on-one with our goal keeper (Brad Comins) who made a fantastic save to keep the score at 0:0. Our boys then took the initiative again and pined MGS to their half. Mitchell Dickenson started off another flow of attacking football and linked-up with Tom Wilmot to put him one-on-one with the keeper but his low drive was unable to beat the keeper. The 1st half ended 0:0.

The second half started with us playing a lot better due to the uplifting and inspirational half time talk form Mr Flower and myself. Jack Collins came on for Jordan Smith and we started creating more scoring chances but we were not taking the numerous chances we created and we paid the price. Another long ball (Stoke City Style) and their attacker got a clear sight on goal and made it count. 1:0 to MGS.

Our player showed dept and strength as they picked themselves up and carried on attacking and creating chances. Mitchell Dickenson made another dashing run through MGS mid-field and defence going past 5 players before his goal-bound shot got deflected for a corner kick. (It was becoming clear it wasn’t going to be our day).

Penalty Kick, WHAT???.

The lines man signalled for a penalty kick even though the tackle was made way outside the penalty area. Penalty taken and we found ourselves 2:0 down. However, the resilience of our players were not dampened as they applied more pressure. Daniel Sharpe worked the ball with Liam Matthews before linking up Tom Wilmot and he dribbled the defender and got himself one-on-one with the keeper for the 3rd time in the match but his shot was saved by the keeper. The match ended 2:0

Our boys showed a lot of maturity in the way they managed themselves before, during and after the match and we are very proud of their achievements. I will also like to say a big thank you to Mark Jones for helping us organise the matches and logistics this season.

Geoff and Chidi

Year 7 League Cup Final

Cornwallis vs Holmesdale

Having convincingly defeated long term foes Oakwood Park in the semi-final, Cornwallis faced their final (and possibly sternest) test of the season; Holmesdale.

In the build-up to the match there was a lot of excitement amongst the team with thoughts of carving a place in history weighing heavy on the shoulders of the young squad. The first year 7 Cornwallis team to lift the league and cup double would be something to tell the Grandchildren in years to come.

Even the management were not removed from the pressure, an agent acting on behalf of Jon Spurling had already approached Chris Verrall with the promise of a biography should the team succeed. “From MS DOS to Glory, Chris Verrall, My life so far” was certain to be a bestseller.

The match started with the players slightly daunted by the massive pitch and a new (3G) surface but the words of the management were clear; “enjoy the game and play fair.” Despite the size of the pitch and the foreign venue, the crowd was almost partisan featuring many parents and staff willing the team on.

The first half was a cagey affair with every Cornwallis player showing that they were completely focussed on the job in hand. The crowd had continued to swell and the support were impressed with what they were seeing. Every ball was fought for and the team pressed in groups across the pitch. The rumours that Chris Verrall had mentored a young ‘Pep’ Guardiola in the art of pressing seemed evident as every ball was fought for in typical Barca style. Kieran Monk highlighted his worth as an attacking and defensive force as time and again he dispossessed the opposition on the left wing.

An early injury worry saw Jon Beck (CB) cautiously substituted for Matt Constable. With George Taylor (RB) taking up the vacant spot in the centre of defence, young Matt (a big shout for most improved player of the season) was placed in the role of right back. George Moon quickly settled his fellow George and the defence looked rock solid immediately with Mark O’Boyle taking station in goal and putting in another commanding performance between the sticks.

The change immediately led to a goal. Matt cleared the ball from defence with a deft pass to Jack French, he picked out Jack Collins who fought off the attention of Holmesdale’s 6ft (!) defender and poked the ball passed the approaching keeper. 1-0 Cornwallis!

The half ended with more hard work across the team with Callum Ray putting in a star performance at left back despite carrying a slight injury. At half time the message was the same, keep playing the way you know you can. The one suggestion made; take on a few more longer shots and work the keeper –little did we know that moments later these words would be ringing in Holmesdale ears.

The second half started much like the first but with the team showing a new found confidence and (respectful) swagger. Team captain Callum O’Brien won another 50/50 challenge and found Ollie Cooke in space in the centre of the park. Ollie immediately realised that the keeper was a trifle off his line and decided to attempt an audacious shot from at least 35 yards. The shot was sweetly struck and seemed to hang in the air for an age. The competent Holmesdale keeper judged his jump well but could only parry the powerful shot into the roof of the net, 2-0 Cornwallis!

As the second half continued the team went from strength to strength with Matt Dunmill living up to his billing following a goal in his previous match (his debut). He and Jack seemingly communicating on a level enjoyed by so few Premiership strike partnerships. A casual observer likened them to Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen with near telepathic levels of communication.

This relationship on the field led to the next goal with Matt breaking through with an energetic run and was quickly one on one with the keeper. Having done everything right the keeper made a great save at Matt’s feet and the ball broke loose only to fall to the feet of a closing Jack who poached a goal with a cool chip to his right, the keepers left. 3-0 Cornwallis!

As the game reached the last quarter Cornwallis seemed in constant attack unleashing wave after wave of offensive play and pinning Holmesdale in their last third. They had no answer to the quantity and quality of the chances being made. Ollie Delves, who replaced Jack French at half time and Josh Turnham (on for Kieran Monk) were in their element on the wings as they time and again delivered incisive passes and it was obvious that the spirit of Holmesdale had now been destroyed.

The Holmesdale management were almost begging for mercy despite arrogantly talking up their chances prior to the match. But there a cherry for the top of one of the sweetest cakes in year 7 Football History here at the Cornwallis.

Sam Ardley our able Keeper from the semi-final came on late in the game and immediately busied himself passing to Jack on the edge of the box. Jack proceeded to beat no fewer than six players, rounded the keeper twice and slotted it between two defenders on the line for a virtuoso final goal. 4-0 Cornwallis!

As the game concluded Cornwallis ended one of their most sporting victories with a round of applause and handshakes all round for a strong Holmesdale side who clearly did not play to their best but showed a lot of heart.

This was a commanding performance from start to finish with every player in the team highlighting what makes this special game so beautiful. They proved an example to every other team in the league and it has been an absolute pleasure to be involved in managing a team with so much passion and natural flair. Chris and I really feel that this team (with quality management) has the opportunity to win plaudits throughout their schooling here at Cornwallis and are a real credit to the school.

We re-wrote the school mantra for the team this year and it was upheld in every, single game played…Work Hard, Play Fair.

A big thank you to Peter Georgio for his support in the final and running the line brilliantly throughout the match and to Sophie Williams and Gail Rawlins for their vocal support throughout the game.

Cornwallis VS Oakwood Park Grammar School

After winning the East League and being undefeated the Cornwallis boys finally had their next test, the winners of the West League (Oakwood Park Grammar). The winner of this game would go on to star in the final with the chance of cup glory. During my time at Cornwallis we have never beat Oakwood Grammar, and they too were undefeated all season. Make no mistake, this was going to be a tough game.

Upon reaching Oakwood’s home pitch the sun was shining, but there was a tense feel atmosphere surrounding the players. It was time for one of the famous “Special Ones” team talk from team managers Paul Sheehan and Chris Verrall. By the end of the talk, the players were fired up were ready to do battle.

From the moment the whistle was blown the team pressed hard and began to build upon possession. Then, with one quick break and a ball over the top from Jack Collins, Josh was put through. Josh, who normally plays left wing sprinted onto the pass, picked his spot and rifled one into the top corner. This was definitely close to goal of the season; the replays didn’t do it justice. The Oakwood grammar boys barely knew what hit them and looked shocked. Time to capitalise...

The boys continued to press but were caught with some quick one two passing and a killer through ball which Cesc Fabregas would have been proud of himself. The Oakwood striker ran onto the ball and calmly chipped the ball over our new goalkeeper Sam.

It was a tough game for about 10 minutes before our star striker, Jack Collins latched onto a through ball from new boy Matt Dunmill. Jack, from the tightest of angles dispatched the ball past the flailing Oakwood keeper. The atmosphere was electric; the score was 2-1.

With ten minutes to go until half time Cornwallis looked in control and were pressing for a third. Another mazy run from Jack Collins who beat 4 players was enough and he calmly made it 3-1 to Cornwallis. We predict big things for Jack in the future, Mourinho better be watching this space.

Finally with about 3 minutes to go new boy, Matt Dunmill scored a scorcher into the bottom corner. Matt, who used to play for local team Gillingham was playing out of his normal position, but still managed to impose himself on the game. What he lacks in height, he makes up in tenacity.

The boys finished the first half 4-1, an amazing score line considering that Oakwood had not lost a game all season. We were taking the approach that it was still 0-0.

The second half began as expected and Oakwood came at us with everything. If it wasn’t for the outstanding efforts of George Hill and Jonathan Beck at the back then surely Oakwood would have found their intelligent play more fruitful. Unfortunately from a dubious corner decision, the ball ricocheted off the Cornwallis back line and just crossed the line. We had a chat with the linesman at the time but he was unable to comment. He did look a shady character!

Oakwood continued to press and eventually were caught out with a quick Cornwallis counter attack straight from the training ground. Jon Beck, who started the move from defence, rounded off an marvellous performance by getting on the end of a Jack Collins cross making it 5-2. Special praise should go to Callum O’Brien. Callum, younger brother of Golfing star Jade O’Brien showed maturity beyond his years to control the centre of midfield. Again, we predict big things for this young man in the future.

Cornwallis ran out 5-2 winners and are now through to the final. We deserve this success as not only did the boys play well but their attitudes were outstanding. Mr Sheehan and I are so proud of the team’s success this season and feel that special praise should go to them for their attitude. It’s a privilege to be associated with a school that has students as mature as the Year 7 football team. Bring on the opposition!!!!!!!!!!

Saturday 13th March - Kent Cross Country Championships

Jack French represented Kent in the next stage of the Cross Country Championships on Sat 13th March.  Unfortunately Jack came 55th out of 100 but had to contend with a very quick race due to the course being relatively flat.   Jack had won a Gold medal from the Maidstone Schools Cross Championships as he came in the top 10 of his age group.  This was presented to him during Year 7 Assembly.  Jack is now rated 8th best in Kent and we wish him all the best with his future races - he will be one to watch in the Year 7 Athletics this summer!!

Monday 22nd March - Year 7 Kent School Games Hockey Qualifier - Tonbridge School

Cornwallis had a squad of 11 players which was exceptional considering we do not have a hockey squad in Year 8, 9 and 10.  We travelled to Tonbridge School on a Monday morning raring to go for the 5 matches that were ahead of us.

The first game was against Tunbridge Wells Boys Grammar and they took us by surprise and scored a goal within the first few minutes of the game.  This game was always on the defence and we failed to mark all the players at times leaving the goal keeper in a one on one situation with the Centre Forward.

The overall score was 3-0 lost.

The second game was against  Gravesend Grammar School.  Cornwallis connected well together and made some fluent passing between the team.  Harry scored 2 goals in this game and the overall score was 2-1.  A good win.

The third game was a tough game against Borden.  Borden dominated the attacking play and failed to give us any chances in our attacking third.  During the game, a high ball connected with Harry's eye and he had to come off injured. The score was 5-0 lost.

The fourth game against Gravesend Grammar B team.  This team was the closest game of the tournament and we had lots of opportunities and short corners to score but unfortunately could not get the ball in the goal.  Due to several attacking breaks by Gravesend, they scored 2 goals ending the game on a 2-0 loss.

The fifth and final game of the tournament was against Skinners School.  The whole team played their best hockey in the final game and gave it their all.  Unfortunately we were unable to make the most of the scoring opportunities and lost 2-0.

Overall in the tournament we came 5th out of 6th.  The boys had a thoroughly good day of hockey and displayed excellent sportsmanship and made Cornwallis proud.  We were the only school to enter from Maidstone Schools so that was an achievement in itself.  Thank you also to the parents who came to support us.

The team was:

 Dan Bristow

George Ridgeway

Harry Gollop - Captain

Luke Wellsman

Tom Ridgeway

Ben Hartnell

Thursday 25th March - Year 8 & 9 Rugby v St. Simon Stock

An under strength Cornwallis side lost heavily in the rain away at St Simon Stock on Thursday 25th March.  Missing several regular players, the boys made a poor start, conceding early tries due to a disinclination to tackle or chase kicks.  Little went right for the Cornwallis team, although as the half progressed a few individuals started to make their mark through excellent try-saving tackles, the pick of the bunch coming from Lewis Midwinter, with a superb tackle on the opposition wing.

The lethargy lifted in the second half and, apart from a couple of disappointing tries conceded directly from kick-offs, the game became more competitive.  Liam Rice-Wilson made a few darting runs; Liam Ingram also tried to break through, but to no avail.  Siyamilan Navaratnam was the man of the match, standing out for his fearless chasing and tackling on the larger opposition, saving two clear tries through his unwavering commitment.  The pack closed ranks in the second half and held out during a sustained period of pressure on the try-line, where the strength and nous of Jarvis Mewett and Tom Steel evoked images of the Spartans at Thermopylae.

Finally, Cornwallis scored a well-deserved try as Jake White crashed over from a maul, resulting from the best period of play for our boys, with wave after wave of attack breaking the Stocky ranks.

Final Score: St Simon Stock 60 Cornwallis 5 (try: Jake White)

Team: 15: George Wellard, 14, Lewis Midwinter, 13, Lewis Milford, 12, Liam Ingram, 11, Siyamilan Navaratnam, 10, Liam Rice-Wilson (capt), 9, Stephen Collins, 8, Ryan Oxley, 5, Tom Steel, 4, Jarvis Mewett, 3, Jake White, 2, Ben Pass, 1, Joe Thwaites

U15 Basketball Tournament/ Tonbridge 25th of March.

The Cornwallis Basketball Team arrived at the tournament in Tonbridge on the 25th of March after coming second in the Aylesford Tournament.  The starting line up consisted of Brandon Atkinson, Faraz Dastagir, Ryan Plumbly, Toby Alldridge and Daniel Barkaway with James Relf on bench.

The first teams to play were Aylesford vs Haylesbrook within 10 minute games. Haylesbrook held a good tight defence so managed to keep them off the hoop and also make Aylesford take risky shots from outside the key.  Haylesbrook won 8-6.

Cornwallis vs. Cranbrook. Toby Alldridge took the tip off for the start of the game and won the ball for Cornwallis. Ryan Plumbly scored the first two points with a jump shot from outside of the key in which was assisted by Brandon Atkinson. Toby Alldridge rejected a shot from Cranbrook and did a turnover for the Cornwallis team. Cranbrook then came back with revenge scoring a tear drop shot making the score 2-2. Daniel Barkaway scored a fast break layup adding the score up to 4-2. Faraz Dastagir made a vital mistake taking a risky off balanced shot in which missing the hoop giving the turnover to Cranbrook and giving them the fast break for the 2 points make the score 4-4. James Relf came on for Faraz Dastagir for the last 2 minute of the game. Toby Alldridge received the ball from Ryan Plumbly and drove through defence to the hoop for 2 points and a foul. Toby Alldridge unfortunately missed the Free Throw. Cornwallis 6 – Cranbrook – 4.

The next game played was Aylesford vs Cranbrook. Cranbrook won 6-4

Cornwallis vs. Haylesbrook. The tip-off went to Haylesbrook and they straight away got to work. This team were a lot stronger and athletic than the other teams. Hayesbrook scored 2 quick baskets using their centre as the advantage; unfortunately Faraz Dastagir in the first 2 mintues went down with a serious injury and was out of all other games. Ryan Plumbly managed to put down a great jump shot from the side of the key. Toby Alldridge then drove to the basket with a layup making the scores 4-4. Daniel Barkaway on defence created a shot blocked and played point to the basket and scored making the score 6-4. Haylesbrook came back with revenge scoring one jump shot and a second change rebound. Leading 8-6. Toby Alldridge in the last minute drove to the basket to make the scores equal. Cornwallis 8 – Haylesbrook  8.

Cornwallis vs. Alyesford. In the first 3 minutes Ryan Plumbly managed to get create 3 assists for Toby Alldridge putting the points down, he scored the first 8 points in the first 3 minutes with Ryan Plumbly on his shoulder. Daniel Barkaway managed to score a hook shot from outside the key making scores 10-0. Aylesford scored a basket using their centre to their advantage. Ryan plumbly knocked down a layup making the scores 12-2. Cornwallis 12 – Aylesford 2

The win of the tournament could of not have been won without the great help of James Relf with his great passing, dribbling also his first game and Brandon Atkinson for the knowledge of the game and great dribbling techniques and passing between all players.

This had concluded the overall win in the tournament gaining another trophy and another tournament for the Cornwallis Basketball team on the 1st of July.

Many thanks from the Basketball Team to Mr Pennington for the coaching and the arrangements.

Cornwallis Yr 10 & 11 Rugby vs Holmesdale

Cornwallis 25
Holmesdale 24

Wednesday 17th March

After Holmesdales' reliable late arrival it did not take long for Cornwallis to get on the scoreboard. From the first possession Cornwallis maintained the ball for phases before Max Bishop eyed a gap and scored.
Cornwallis kept the pressure on soon after as Jonty Hood touched down from a set play from a line out. Holmesdale managed to stay in touch through their livewire scrum half who managed to touch down twice from quick taps.
Cornwallis started strong after the break and were rewarded with a penalty kick shortly after.
Both teams scored again,Craig Jessop this time finishing off in the corner.
The game was eventually concluded 1 min before the time as Sam Austin received a back injury. The decision was made to stop the game Cornwallis deservedly winners 25-24.
More important than the victory was the way in which the team played. For the first time this season players linked together to and used the ball to create opportunities to score.

Team: Jonty Hood (captain), James Gough, Tim Boon, Josh Cook, Georgio Krousti, Duncan Drury, Mike King, Sam Merrel, Matt Older, Lewis Goodrich, Alex Clarke, Craig Jessop, Craig Fawcett, Sam Austin, Max Bishop, Tom Jenkins Luke Quinn

Monday 22nd March

A depleted Cornwallis side faced Alyesford on the unfamiliar game day of Monday oin what was a rescheduled cup match. With players away on trips, acting at the Hazlett and sick Tim Boon was asked to stand in as captain.
From the kick-off Cornwallis could not control the ball and if not for a knock-on in-goal Alyesford would have scored in the opening minute. Cornwallis eventually gathered their composure and after some consistent pressure Matt Older scored the first try. The game continued like this with Cornwallis allowing Alyesford to dominate and then displaying their own moments of brilliance. Mike Oakley had a very strong game at No. 8. His strong running was eventually rewarded in the 2nd half when he finished off the most impressive play of the game: the ball was moved wide before Alex Clarke turned it back to Oakley who ran a lovely angle back towards the posts. Basketball Recruit Duncan Drury dominated the lineout all day before Older and Jenkins touched down to complete a compehensive victory 27-7 to Cornwallis.

Tuesday 16th March 2010 U12 Netball league results

On 16th March 2010 the year 7 netball team played the 2nd round of their league matches.  First up we were against Maplesden Noakes.  We unfortunately made a slow start to the game allowing 3 goals in during the first half.  After a team talk at half time we came back out with a strong defensive side and Ayo Lasoye and Ashley Jordan managed to prevent MNS scoring again.  However we only managed to get 2 goals in attack making the final score Cornwallis 2 v 3 Maplesden Noakes.

Next we played SSS who beat us in the tournament last week so we had a lot to prove.  We put in a great team performance playing really well in defence and attack.  Whitney Wilsher and Ashley Fell fed the ball well in attack and Captain Emily Towner and Ashley Fell supported the defence.  The final score was Cornwallis 5 v 4 SSS.

The final game was against MGGS B team.  The whole team really excelled themselves during this game working brilliantly with each other.  The ball was shot really well by Harriet Jeffrey and Lydia Wils leaving MGGS’ defence behind.  The final score was Cornwallis 8 v 3 MGGS. A brilliant result!

Year 7 Rugby v Oakwood Park Grammar School

This match was always going to be a tough encounter, but the year 7 warriors were on a high after dispatching the other Grammar School rivals (MGS) last week

It was a fast paced start with both teams looking to test each other out wide. A good display of skill and handling made it an excellent spectacle. Once both teams settled down the more direct route was taken. Both teams started to batter each other with bruising runs and some bone crunching tackles. The big enforcer Tom Ridgeway was leading this department.

As Cornwallis started to get tired Oakwood showed their class and hit the lead with a couple of good tries. Debutant Joe Cook was impressive, especially when he charged over the line underrneath the posts to put Cornwallis back on track.

Vocal fly-half George Hill crashed over with a few minutes despair with some help from the forwards and ever present Bailey May. Unfortunately he was denied and held up due to some excellent scrambling defence from Oakwood.

In the end it was a hard fought game. Cornwallis should be proud of themselves but were beaten by a better side on the day.

Score: Cornwallis 5 – Oakwood 31

Teamlist: James Roberts, James Lomax, Alex O’Hara, Toby Patey-Ford, George Hill, Reece Brooker, Tom Ridgeway, Bailey May, Steven Evans, Michael Welbourne, Jacob Andreason, Joe Cook, Jack Collins

Year 8 & 9 Rugby v Oakwood Park Grammar School

Oakwood took the early lead with some very strong running from the centres, however Cornwallis did not give up but unfortunately conceded another try (10-0). The team’s time finally came when George used his pace and power to drive over the line after a planned backs move. This gain in confidence lead to another great try from Kieran, who used his pace well and took the opposing winger on the outside to make the match 10-10. Oakwood then pilled on the pressure and scored some very well worked tries taking the score to (53-10). However a great individual try from Liam Rice-Wilson who chipped and over the top and collected to score under the posts, Rice-Wilson also added the conversion to make the score (53-17). Oakwood then scored another try to make the score (58-17). Cornwallis still didn’t let their heads drop and managed to score another try in the corner.

Teamlist: Tom Steel, Ben Pass, Joe Thwaites, Jake White, Steve, Liam Rice-Wilson, Liam Ingram, Kieran Honey, George Wellard, Josh Henderson, Ryan Oxley, Jordan Nash.

Year 9 Match Report: The Cornwallis Academy 50 – 17 Maplesden Noakes

A powerful Cornwallis team scored another significant victory, this time over local rivals Maplesden Noakes in a home fixture.  The team were raring to go by the time their opponents arrived, and soon went into the lead when Jake White stormed through after a quickly taken penalty.  George Wellard, looking the part at full-back caught a long kick and ran at pace through several tackles before being brought down in the MN twenty-two.  Matt Russell picked up at the ruck and sent Liam Ingram over for the first of two tries.  There followed ten minutes of crazy rugby, as Cornwallis scored three length of the field tries directly from the kick-off.  Russell scored two of them, gliding past defenders like a young ginger Serge Blanco.  Throughout the game the Cornwallis backs looked fast and threatening in attack, expertly marshalled by Liam Rice-Wilson, and were strong in the tackle in defence.

After conceding a sloppy try, Cornwallis put the pressure on again and Etheridge picked up and scored a classic Number 8 try from a scrum.  Several replacements came on at half time and this broke the rhythm of the team a little, but they soon settled down.  The pack tightened the game up and Tom Steel went over from a maul.  The final try of the game fittingly went to Joe Thwaites, who took the ball from a switch with Rice-Wilson and ran in from the 22.  Thwaites had earlier made an outstanding tackle, chasing right across the pitch to stop a dangerous run from the fast MN wing.

Cornwallis 50 – 17 Maplesden Noakes

Tries: Ingram 2, Russell 2, Etheridge, Steel, Thwaites, White.

Conversions: Rice-Wilson 5

Team:

15 George Wellard, 14 Lewis Milford, 13 Matt Russell, 12 Liam Ingram, 11 Adam Wood, 10 Liam Rice-Wilson (captain), 9 Stephen Collins, 8 George Etheridge, 7 Jake White, 6, Jordan Nash, 5 Matt Hood, 4 Joe Thwaites, 3 Billy Douglas, 2 Jarvis Mewett, 1 Tom Steel

Thursday 11 March

The Yr8 girls played 4 league fixtures last night, for 2 hours in the freezing cold weather.

They played St Simon Stock in the first game and performed really well in the first half, being down 1-0 at half time. The 2nd half was however totally different and the height of the SSS girls being the telling difference. Despite some excellent defending by Shottie Hopkins the final score was 6-0 to Stocky.  We managed to beat NLL 6-2 with some good shooting from Harriet Jeffrey. Next up was Maplesden Noakes. We were all really cold by then and finding it difficult to handle the ball. The final score was 1-1 draw and star player in this game was Whitney Wilshire, who is only in year 7, runnning around tirelessly as centre.

In our final game we played Wrotham, who had turned up with only 4 out of the 7 players. 2 of our players, Phoebe Gilbert and Katie Allingham, very sportingly offered to play for the opposition, but we still mananged to come out on top. Final score 4-1 to Cornwallis.

Team List: Shottie Hopkins, Beth Blatchford, Katie Hogan, Phoebe Gilbert, Katie Allingham, Maisie Ralph, Whitney Wilshire, Lydia Wills, Harriet Jeffrey.

Tuesday 9th March

Year 7 Netball tournament

The U12 girls played in the Maidstone netball tournament on Tuesday 9th March.  The first game was against Invicta B side.  The yr 7's came out strong and were playing really well as a team.  Invicta put in a good performance but simply couldn't score against a strong defence from Ayo Lasoye and Ashley Jordan.  The final score was cornwallis 3 v 0 Invicta.  A greeat result against a grammar school team.

The second game was against Wrotham.  We continued to play a good defence and the attackers really stepped up a gear.  The team fed well into the circle and Harriet Jeffrey and Lydia Wils shot really well.  The final score was Cornwallis 7 v 0 Wrotham.

The third game was against SSS.  Unfortunately the team came out a little tired from the first 2 games and getting very cold.  They were a little low on energy and allowed SSS to get a goal in.  Emily Towner fought hard to return the ball through the centre court passing well to Whitney Wisher and Ashley Fell.  We managed to equalise but lost another in the 2nd half.  The final score was Cornwallis 1 v 2 SSS.

The final game was against MGGS.  The girls came out confident and scored an early goal.  However MGGS were a very strong squad and quickly took control of the game.  They managed to feed into their tall shooters well and we simply couldn't hold them off.  FInal score Cornwallis 1 v 11 MGGS.

We unfortunately didn't qualify for the play offs but finished 5th overall (3rd comprehensive).

Wednesday 10th March

Year 7 Rugby v MGS

Maidstone Grammar School Vs Cornwallis Academy Match Report. Michael Welbourne was the captain and unfortunately lost the toss; which meant that M.G.S was to start the match. After a minute and a half Kieran was passed the ball and ran the whole pitch and scored after some tense forward play building up the great run. Michael the team’s kicker luckily got the first kick.  M.G.S put up a good fight however was no-match for Kieran’s blistering pace that left players in his wake. This time the ball was placed under the posts for an easy kick, which made the score 12-0 to Cornwallis. Some loose play let M.G.S take control for a while, some strong tackles from Sam and Tom left M.G.S quacking in their boots.  Could this be our first win? Only fate can tell.....

.....After some strong scrimmaging from the forwards Jacob (our Hooker) stole the ball from the opposition Scrum well done to him. Following this came a strong run from George forming a ruck where Josh (second row) made a strong run and touched down for a great try. Next came a great kick from our scrum half making the score 19-0 to the far superior team.  Half-time and the score was Cornwallis Academy 19-0 Maidstone Grammar School.

Half time gave all players a good rest which we all thoroughly deserve after some extremely good play from both sides.

It was Cornwallis to start the half. With a great kick we started the half, Kieran and Siymilan our fastest players chased it and put the full-back under some serious pressure. With a good kick they were out of there twenty two area. A lineout was to be played and Bailey our prop who was acting as lineout thrower threw a great ball to tom at the back of the lineout, a great offload allowed the backs to show their class with some exquisite passing. Impressing the ref as he even said,‘captain you’ve trained em’ well’. This of course delighted our team. M.G.S was helpless but put up a real good fight. But from a mistake at the ruck allowed a quick penalty to be taken and M.G.S were to score. Unfortunately he missed the kick. The score 19-5 to Cornwallis.

This seemed to be all, however some lack of good play aloud some strong runners from M.G.S to get trough and score another try. Was this a twist in the tail? The conversion was successful and the score was left at 19-12 for a while. Cornwallis picked up from this and exploited there lush moves. Kieran  was allowed some space and he used it well and scored. The kick was successful and we were back in our stride. (26-12)

More key runs were made and Josh executed them and gobbled up another try. The kick was an easy one and was well taken. (33-12) M.G.S were strong and fought well and this carried on throughout the match and they brought on some subs and this was a good decision. These subs were fast and agile and it showed when they were gifted an opportunity which they took and deserved. A try was added to the list of scores. Unlikely the kick was missed as it was a relatively easy kick. (33-17) Cornwallis had no subs and fatigue started to show but team spirit was still there.

We now found ourselves in there half with a scrum some great hooking from Jacob let us win our own ball and the wing was left empty and Michael used it and scored the conversion was a great one and the score was now 40-17.

A poor kick from M.G.S let Michael catch and run into their twenty two but was well tackled and a strong ruck led to a Siymilan try. Luckily the kick went over leaving the tail of scores at 47-17.

Some great play from the whole team but some poor play from the opposition lead to try and the kick was yet again went over-luckily; as it bounced and hit the cross bar and went in!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Final score Maidstone Grammar School 17-56 Cornwallis Academy.

In the second game of the evening, Cornwallis played Wrotham and Cornwallis were eager for a win.  The team connected well and communication amongst players were good which resulted in the team winning 3-0 overall.

In the third game, Cornwallis faced Invicta A.  Cornwallis knew this was going to be a tough match and played their best game yet.  Unfortunately, Cornwallis could not match Invicta for scoring goals and lost 6-1.

The final match of the night was against NLL.  The team was raring to go and dominated the game from start to finish.  There was excellent play from all the players which resulted in a 5-0 win.

Year 8/9s Rugby Fixture 25th February 2010. Astor of Hever 0 – 46 The Cornwallis Academy

It was on a dreary afternoon in February that I beheld the accomplishment of the coaching team’s toils.  With an anxiety that almost amounted to agony, I gathered the Year 8/9 rugby team around me, that I might infuse a spark of the spirit of teamwork into the collection of talent that listened to my pre-match talk.  I waited until it was already 5 minutes into the first half; the rain pattered dismally into the many puddles, when, through the mist, I saw Liam Ingram break through the line; he sprinted hard, and scored the first try in the corner.

How can I describe my emotions at this early success, or how to describe the subsequent game of rugby, which with such good team play the team had endeavoured to win?  The team was balanced, and I had selected the players who had been to training on Tuesday.  Training! Good God! The moves they had learned and practised in training came off; the skills they developed were in evidence; but these luxuriances only formed a part of what they experienced.

The players all came off the pitch muddied and elated, and they could all say that they had contributed to the 46-0 victory.  Debutant Liam Ingram settled in immediately to the team, scoring the opening try which Liam Rice-Wilson converted.  Rice-Wilson then scored the next fourteen points on his own, with a first half hat-trick of tries, including a very alert quick tap-and-go from a penalty, and two more conversions, which he did extremely well to drop-kick off the slippery surface from tight angles.

Strong tackling from the fearless Ben Pass, ably supported by Jarvis Mewett and Tom Steel, kept the home side attack at bay.  Adam Wood and Connor Gordon on the wings both looked fast and committed;  Jake White in the centre caused problems for the home side.  In the second half Matt Russell came on and scored directly from the kick-off with a strong, mazy run that split the defence.  Rice-Wilson’s kicking game was on song and this led to Ingram’s third try after he followed up a kick from the half-way line and beat the defence for pace.  Joe Thwaites capped another impressive performance from him in the final minute of the game as he broke away from a maul for the last try after a massive effort from the forwards.

Team: Jordan Nash, Ben Pass, Tom Steel; Jarvis Mewett, Joe Thwaites; George Etheridge (captain); Liam Rice-Wilson, Liam Ingram; Connor Gordon, Jake White, Stephen Collins, Adam Wood; Siyamilan Navaratnam.  Replacements: Ryan Oxley, Matt Russell, George Wellard.

Cornwallis Yr 10 & 11 Rugby vs The Howard School
Loss 17-10
On a wet and muddy Thursday afternoon Cornwallis took the field in their second league match against The Howard School. The team started confidently with all players tackling hard and moving the ball well.
THS however scored the first points from a penalty kick. Cornwallis replied shortly after a typical bustling run by captain Jonty Hood saw him crash over just before the half.
Halftime score  5-3 to Cornwallis.
Cornwallis came out of the half fired up  and after an inspiring run from Max bishop and some strong running close to the ruck by the forward pack,Josh Cook burst straight through to score untouched in the corner.
With 3 minutes to go and the score locked at 10-all it looked as if a tie was inevitable.
But as fate would have it a penalty and a lack of ability to clear the line gave THS the opportunity to attack the try line and the eventually theycrashed over, the conversion dually added.
Final score 17-10.
Special mention to James Gough who displayed fearless tackling all day and Alex Clarke who controlled the game well from 10 with a cultured right boot.

Team: Jonty Hood, James Gough, Adam Staden, Georgio Krousti, Josh Cook, Alex Clarke, Max Bishop, Craig Fawcett, Sam Austen,  Mike Oakley, Craig Jessop, Tyler Jones, and others

Wednesday 20/01/10 - U13 Girls Basketball tournament

On Wednesday the 20th of January we took 16 girls form Year 7 and 8 to a take part in an U13 Maidstone Basketball Tournament.  On arrival we found out that NLL had pulled out so we were able to have a Year seven and eight team.

Year 7 played MGGS first and took the lead early on with some great dribbling by Lydia Wills.  Ashley Fell did some great defence work and it wasn't long before she had scored two baskets.  Emily Towner also displayed some good attacking skills and she soon had her first basket.  At the final whistle the team won 8-6 an excellent start for the team who had never played competitive basketball before.

Next game was Year 7 against Year 8.  Year 8 took the lead as Shottie Hopkins proved too strong for the Year 7.   There were some goof performances in defence by Megan Murrell and Chloe Mannering.  Amy Pearce scored some good baskets as did Ella Davies.  The Year 8 proved too good for Year 7, but Year 7 played well and didn't give up.

Year 8 continued there success beating MGGS and Aylesford.  The team worked well together with Elle Cloke making some good interceptions and Sian Matthews demonstrating some good defensive work under the basketball.  Sophie Brown make some excellent passes leading to setting up team mates for a basketball.

Year 7 beat Aylesford next with Ashley Jordan making some excellent long passes to set up a goal for her team mates.  Whitney Wilsher was quick around the court and made some good interceptions.  Ayo Lasoye used her height to her advantage and got some excellent rebounds under the basket.  Brooke Huggett carried the ball down the court well.  All this excellent play led to a second win.

Both Year 7 and 8 lost to Maplesden Noakes but put in an excellent effort.  This led to Year 8 making the final and having to play Maplesden Noakes again.  They were determined to beat them this time round.  It was a difficult game and at full time it was tied at four a piece.  After discussing tactics which resulted in Megan Murrell permanently marking their best shooter, Shottie made two excellent shots which put us in the lead 8-4 which was enough to win.  An excellent performance by all Year 8, well done.  We have now qualified to complete in the Regional U13 tournament.

The Year 7's were playing for 3 or 4 and had to face MGGS.  They put in an excellent performance but unfortunately lost to them this time around, this meant they finished in fourth.  A Brilliant performance.  Well done.

Monday 25/01/10 - U14 Boys Kent Badminton Championships

After winning the Maidstone Championships, Cornwallis now progressed to the Kent Championships. This tournament was also a trial for the Kent Schools Games where the top four teams go through. There was some tough opposition present with badminton juggernauts Judd and Gravesend Grammar School offering plenty of intimidation with the way they warmed up and played their shots.

Our boys played very well but at times let their frustration get the better of them. In the end we cam 6th. This will be a valuable learning experience for future years.

Tuesday 26/01/10 - Year U15 Girls Football

We took a mixed yr 9 and 10 football team to Maplesden Noakes for the first U15 girls football league games of the season.  It was a freezing cold afternoon but the girls were in good spirits and ready to play.  Our first game should have been against Malling school but they didn't turn up so Cornwallis took the points leaving the girls a little disappointed (and cold!) but happy to have gained points in the league.

The next game was against Holmesdale.  The team put in an outstanding performance with Sam Richards scoring our first goal.  Lucy Dadson then put in a second goal for us just before half time.  We felt confident going into the second half 2-0 up and Paige Daniels managed to convert an excellent pass from Liz Hopper to score a great goal in the second half.  The team put in an outstanding performance and gained a well deserved 3-0 win.

The final game was against Maplesden Noakes school.  They were a much tougher team and had a strong defence.  However, we had a number of shots on target that were saved by the keeper. Our persistence eventually paid off as Liz Hopper managed to get a goal past their keeper taking us to 1-0.  Luci Ralph, Charlotte Thatcher and Alex Letherby then put in a strong defensive performance and stopped them scoring.  The final score was 1-0.  Liz Hopper was awarded player of the match for her exceptional effort in supporting the team in attack and defence.

U16 Boys Basketball v MGS

The rescheduled match between the two schools was played at the MGS Entertainment Centre. It was in it’s typical good condition, -5 below freezing inside, so it took a little while for the boys to warm-up.

It was a fast paced and at times nasty contest with an MGS player eventually being ejected from the stadium. For most of the game the two sides traded buckets and it became a bit of a see-saw match.

The last quarter saw Cornwallis play some panic basketball, with some awful passing and defence. MGS hit some crucial baskets which broke the backbone of our performance. In the end MGS won by 3 points. There was some controversy over the scoring and tallying of points. An official complaint was made but the original result was upheld due to insufficient evidence.

U16 Boys next game: Thursday 25/02/10 v Aylesford @ home

U15 boys next match: Thursday 04/02/10 (tournament @ Aylesford as trials for the Kent Schools Games)

Teamlist: Duncan Drury, Giorgio Krousti, Toby Alldridge, Ryan Plumbly, Kwame Holt, Will Flint, Eoghan May, Brandon Atkinson

Thursday 10th December 2009 - U16 Basketball V Holmesdale

The team travelled to Holmesdale to play their 2nd fixture of the league. We were in for a good chance as the boys had been training continuously at lunchtimes and after school.

We had nine players which allowed for an efficient rotation system to allow people to recover and give optimum performance throughout. This worked very well in the first half as we took the lead by eight points.

The 2nd half started slowly for Cornwallis as shot selection and defensive formations weren’t being utilized thoughtfully. In the end Holmesdale got the better of us and held their composure, whereas Cornwallis started to panic and force unplayable moves.

Cornwallis 26- Holmesdale 32

Year 8 & 9 Rugby v Greenacre

On Wednesday 9th December, a Cornwallis Year 8/9 XV drew 17-17 with Greenacre.  On a muddy pitch, hard work by the forwards showed at the end, as Cornwallis had to come back from 17-5 in the second half.

Tries by Jake White, Joe Thwaites and Matty Hood and a conversion by Liam Rice-Wilson, the captain on the day, led to the points, but in truth it was a team performance that led to the positive result.

Of the year 8s, Lewis Midwinter fitted in admirably at scrum-half, showing an accurate spin-pass off either hand; Joey Kilbride played tenaciously at full-back, and Ben Swift made a pair of crucial try-saving tackles.

Of the year 9s it was good to welcome back Joe Clemons to the pack and, along with Tom Steel, he inspired the newcomers Joe Thwaites and Billy Douglas to dig deep and keep tackling at the end when we were up against a final Greenacre onslaught.

Well done to the following: Jordan Nash, Joe Clemons, Tom Steel, Matty Hood, Joe Thwaites, Jake White, Billy Douglas, Jordan Smith; Lewis Midwinter, Liam Rice-Wilson (c), Siyamilan, Steven Collins, Noah Danielz, Dylan Ruler, Michael Carpenter, Joey Kilbride, Ben Swift.

Year 7 Boys Futsal

The Boys battles hard against a mediocre Aylesford side. The team took an impressive 3-0 lead going into half time. The team however lost some resolve and manage to throw their 3-0 advantage away by letting in 4 goals in the space of 10 minutes. In the dying seconds of normal time Cornwallis clinched a late equaliser sending the game into golden goal extra time. The lads worked hard but could not put the ball into the oppositions net and conceding being knocked out, unfortunately loosing the chance to represent the school in the county championship. Lessons learned: take your chances when you can especially in football as the boys clearly where a better side but could not convert shots into goals

Year 7 & 8 Girls Futsal tournament

Our year 7 and 8 girls participated in the second round of the futstal tournament this Tuesday at Maplesden Noakes School. The team were fanatstic as they put in 110%, worked well as a team and showed great responsibility when off pitch, representing Cornwallis Academy to a high standard.

In particular we had Shae Eaton who showed her leadership skills in pulling the team together and Maddie Harris and Lydia Wills who converted several passes into winning goals. There was also an excellent defence team made up of Shottie Hopkins and Whitney Wilsher. With our new girls Elisha Birkill and Rachel Laqeretabua we were able to keep the pace fast and win 2 games and draw 1.

Well done

Year 9 Rugby Emerging Schools Tournament

Astor of Hever School Tuesday 17th November

The Emerging Schools Tournaments are local Rugby tournaments designed to give schools with 'Emerging' status the chance to compete against schools of a similar level. They are an excellent opportunity to give players experience, especially those who have never played before.

Eight schools entered the Year 9 event and Cornwallis was placed in Pool A with Haysbrooke, Astor of Hever and Mascalls. On half pitches and with slightly amended rules Cornwallis were slow to start. The first game against Haysbrooke resulting in a 10-5 loss. George Wellard scoring the only try.

In the second game against Astor, Cornwallis were clearly dominant winning 20-5. This game was also a great opportunity to 'blood' some new player's Iria Taylor and Joe Twaites showing some promise. Liam Rice-Wilson scoring a hat trick of tries.

The final pool match against Mascalls was to be the most important of the day as a win would guarantee a top four play-off, a loss bottom four. Cornwallis again started slow and due to poor tackling were down early 10-0. A late surge did result in a try to Cornwallis but unfortunately we went down 10-5.

The loss meant a play-off against NLL; poetic justice some might say. Cornwallis quickly established themselves the stronger side scoring some quality try's, A comfortable win 20-5 in the end.

Overall a result of 5th out of 8 which is disappointing for the calibre of players that were present. The highlight of the day was the students playing their first game of rugby. Lets hope they stick with it.

Team: Ethridge, Rice-Wilson, Wellard, Collins, Milford, Mewett, Hillman, Hood, Horton, Douglas, Wilson, Pass, Thwaites, Steel, Frankal, Webb

Senior Hockey match v MGS

1st VI Hockey Match – Played MGS

Lost 2-0

The Underdogs Cornwallis proved to be far from the pushover the MGS hockey team were expecting.  From the start Cornwallis were on the back foot, soaking up the pressure as the MGS midfield pressed forward.  Good defensive work by Jason Dann, Josh Hartnell,  Jack Worley and Andy Friend along with some fine saves from the keeper Matt Emery kept the scores level until about the last 15 minutes , when the umpire failed to notice the MGS striker kicked the ball before rounding the stranded keeper and shooting home.

A slight change in formation for the Cornwallis team with Jack Davies playing further forward allowed Cornwallis midfield of Waqas Dastagir and Giorgia Woods to become a lot more involved and the flow of the game changed as the Cornwallis team started to push forward for an equaliser.  Ryan Dann and Callum Noakes work rate in midfield was relentless and made some good interceptions on the MGS attack.

The second half started as the first finished with Cornwallis pushing forward, Adam Cloke and Matt Murrell constant running caused some problems for MGS and opened up more space for our midfield to push forward.  A second half breakaway goal for MGS with 10 minutes to go did not stop Cornwallis from putting the pressure on the Grammar School team as we continued to push forward and stretch the MGS defence, Cornwallis’s constant attacking failed to test the MGS keeper and the final score was 2-0 to MGS.

It was a fantastic team effort from everybody and proved that Cornwallis hockey teams are  progressing and getting better all the time!
