At Cornwallis Academy we aim to ensure students enjoy their physical education lessons by providing exciting and challenging lessons that enable them to progress as performers and learners. We teach to enable students to achieve to the best of their sporting potential and always try to inspire students to try a variety of different sporting activities. The department promotes student aspirations through PE and Sport to ensure students have a vision and a pathway through our subject. We aim to provide our students with as many opportunities as possible through both curriculum time and extra-curricular clubs.

BTEC First Certificate In Sport
Course content
This is a one year, level two course leading to a qualification, which is the equivalent to two GCSEs at A-C grade. It is a practical, vocational course that focuses on developing a sound understanding and working knowledge of a variety of aspects of sport and is good preparation for students who wish to move onto a career in the wealth of opportunities provided for by the sports industry.

EDEXCEL GCSE Physical Education (Short Course)
Course content
This is a one year course which comprises of the following:
Section A: Exercise and training
Students will need to know how to apply and demonstrate the relationship between the factors affecting participation and performance; know how and why people get involved in sport and understand why it is important to have an active lifestyle. They should be able to relate these factors to their chosen physical activities and show an understanding of their application in sport.
Section B: Safety aspects and risk assessment in sport and physical activity
In this section, candidates should learn the reasons for their obligation to obey the laws, rules and safety requirements of any activity, and be able to assess the risks involved in activities, both to themselves and others. They should understand that these requirements not only relate to good sporting behaviour, but are also designed to ensure the safety of participants.

Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership
Entry Requirements
Course content
The Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership is a one year course that is a nationally recognised qualification that enables successful candidates to independently lead small groups of people in sport and recreational activities. The qualification teaches generic leadership skills such as organisation, planning, communication and teamwork through the medium of sport. It is a fun and practical qualification with no entrance requirements or final examinations to sit.

BTEC National Award in Sport
COURSE CONTENT
This is a two year, level three course leading to a qualification, which is the equivalent to one A-Level at A-E grade. It is a practical, vocational course that focuses on developing a sound understanding and working knowledge of a variety of aspects of sport and is good preparation for students who wish to move onto study a fitness, exercise or sport pathway at University or pursue a career in the wealth of opportunities provided for by the sports industry.
You will study three compulsory units:
• The Body in Action
• Health and Safety in Sport
• Training and Fitness for Sport
You will also study three other units during the two year course from the following:
• Sports Coaching or Leadership in Sport
• Practical Team Sport or Practical Individual Sport
• Sports Development
• Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise

ASSESSMENT

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You will need a Pass grade in any vocational Level 2 Course or minimum Grade C in GCSE PE. Alternatively, a recommendation from a member of the PE Department will be accepted.
EDEXCEL A-LEVEL Physical Education
This course is a progression from the GCSE Physical Education. The content is far more theoretical than the GCSE course and so it is expected that candidates must have gained at least a B in the GCSE full course.
Candidates must also obtain at least a B in the theory section of the GCSE PE exam to be eligible. Students who obtain a C may be considered after an interview with the Head of Department.
EDEXCEL’s GCE in Physical Education comprises four units and contains an Advanced Subsidiary subset of two AS units. The Advanced Subsidiary GCE is the first half of the GCE course and consists of Units 1 and 2. It may be awarded as a discrete qualification or contribute 50 per cent of the total Advanced GCE marks.
AS Modules
UNIT 1
The first section will develop the student’s knowledge and understanding of what constitutes a healthy and active lifestyle. Students will investigate how the body responds and adapts to exercise, the components of physical and skill fitness and different methods of fitness training.
Assessment: One and a half hour exam.
UNIT 2
The fundamental aim of this unit is to engage participants in four tasks. These tasks will offer a framework of opportunities to develop practical experiences and conduct independent research into the structure, provision and analysis of sport and physical activity.
Assessment: This unit is internally assessed, through a portfolio of evidence, for the four tasks within the unit. Students must complete all four task.
A2 Modules
UNIT 3
Students will develop a knowledge and understanding of the short and long-term physiological and psychological preparations made by elite athletes. They will consider the short and long-term technical preparations required.
Assessment: Two hour exam
UNIT 4
The tasks undertaken in Unit 2: The Critical Sports Performer lay the foundation for students to specialise in one practical performance role and progress this performance, and undertake three further tasks. Students will construct a development plan to further progress their performance as performers, leaders or officials.
