KEY  STAGE 4

Core Physical Education

YEAR 9
Students have 150 minutes of PE per week (2 x 75 minute lessons). They participate in a wide range of activities from at least 2 of the following components: Games, Gymnastics, Dance, Athletics and/or Swimming, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities and Health & Fitness. Pupils will be able to follow one of 2 courses offered within core PE.

  • Please not that Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Sport (Exercise and Fitness) will also be available as a subject offered by the PE Department within the Vocational strand.

 

Core PE

Designed to develop various skills and personal attributes.

Course Content
Pupils will participate in a broad and balanced curriculum, experiencing a wide variety of indoor and outdoor activities.

Assessment
Pupils will be assessed continually and given grades for each activity at the end of each six week unit in accordance with National Curriculum standards. On exhibiting the required level of competence pupils will receive their Certificate of Achievement.

GCSE Physical Education Course Content and Assessment

  • Please note that there is a strict criteria for selection into GCSE PE. The criteria will be based on:
  • Attainment in PE through National Curriculum levels
  • Attendance to extra-curricular sports clubs and fixtures
  • Attainment levels gained within the Science Department in the units Sports Challenge and Clone Alone
  • General attitude and behavior in PE (e.g. regularly bringing correct kit)

 

This is a two year course which compromises of the following;

Unit 1: The Theory of Physical Education (40%)

Unit 2: Performance in Physical Education (60%)

This unit is externally assessed; through an externally set examination.

The examination:

  • 1 hour and 30 minutes in length is marked out of 80
  • Includes multiple-choice, short-answer, and longer-answer questions
  • Topics include:
  • Healthy, active lifestyles
  • Exercise and fitness as part of your healthy, active lifestyle
  • Physical activity as part of your healthy, active lifestyle
  • Your personal health and wellbeing
  • Cardiovascular system
  • Respiratory system
  • Muscular system
  • Skeletal system
  • Physical activity and your healthy mind and body

This unit is internally assessed, under controlled conditions

 

The controlled assessment:

  • is internally set
  • is internally marked using published assessment criteria and externally moderated

Practical performance
Students have to offer at least two performances as a player/participant. Students can offer, for example, two
performances as a player/participant, one as a leader and one as an official.

Analysis of performance
Section 2.2: Analysis of performance requires all students to undertake an analysis of performance, which is made up of five separate components:

2.2.1: Rules, regulations and terminology
2.2.2: Observe and analyse performance
2.2.3: Evaluate performance
2.2.4: Plan strategies, tactics and practices
2.2.5: Plan a Personal Exercise Programme (PEP)

YEAR 10

Students you selected the GCSE course in year 9 will continue to complete this in year 10. The students who have completed the Certificate of Achievement course will then have options for the following courses in year 10:

GCSE Physical Education Short Course syllabus 3PE01

Sport Leaders UK level 1 (Games, Health and Fitness/Dance)
The regulatory authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland have approved the extension of all Sports Leaders UK qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework. 

Course Content
Pupils will follow practical activities in keeping with their particular strengths, in addition pupils will learn;


Games/Health and Fitness

Dance

  • Planning, preparing and assisting a simple sporting activity
  • Basic communication skills for leading a sporting activity
  • Principles and practice in delivering a basic

Health and fitness session    

  • Understanding fair play in sport
  • Understanding the role of the official
  • Understanding the scope of local sport and recreation activities
  • Demonstration of leadership skills in sport
  • Planning, preparing & assisting with a simple dance activity
  • Basic communication skills for leading a dance activity
  • Principles of health, fitness and safe dance practice
  • Understanding the relationship of music to dance
  • Understanding the scope of opportunities in dance
  • Creating developing, and assisting with a simple dance piece
  • Demonstration of leadership skills in dance

Assessment
Pupils are required to keep a log book of evidence and experience while the course tutor continually assesses competence within lessons.

Core PE
Students may continue to follow the Core PE course into year 10 where students will extend their knowledge and experiences through a broad curriculum.

GCSE Physical Education Short Course
If students in the Core PE groups improve their attainment in accordance with the GCSE PE criteria, then they MAY have an opportunity to complete the GCSE PE short course (equivalent to half a GCSE).

This is a two year course which compromises of the following;

BTEC FIRST DIPLOMA IN SPORT

COURSE CONTENT

This is a two year, level two course leading to a qualification, which is the equivalent to four GCSEs at A-C grade.  It is a practical, vocational course that focuses on developing a sound understanding and working knowledge of a variety of aspects of sport and is good preparation for students who wish to move onto a career in the wealth of opportunities provided for by the sports industry. 

You will study two compulsory units:

  • The Body in Sport
  • Health, Safety and Injury in Sport

 

You will also study four optional units during the 2 year course which will include a range of the following: 

  • The Sports Industry
  • Preparation for Sport
  • Nutrition for Sports Performance
  • Fitness for Sports Performance
  • Instructing Exercise and Fitness
  • Practical Sport
  • Technical Skills and Tactical Awareness
  • Lifestyle and Sports Performance 
  • Sport and Leisure Facility Operations

 

ASSESSMENT

The course consists of six units with each unit having a separate assessment.  Assessment takes place throughout the course and is generally through written assignments. Assessment will be in the form of:

  • Reports
  • Case Studies
  • Presentations
  • Sports Performances
  • Discussions
  • Observations

 

You will be taught a range of skills whilst on the course that will help you with your studies and will allow you to develop into an independent learner.

GRADING

On completion of the course, you will be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction*. To obtain a Merit or
Distinction* grade you will need to consistently demonstrate high level skills.

The study of BTEC Sport allows pupils to gain:

  • knowledge of how the sports industry operates
  • education and training relevant to working in the sports sector
